Mark: Does your mom ever scream at you guys?
Me: No. (Thinking about it.) Yeah, she does have her moods sometimes.
Mark: Yeah, I mean, she speaks Cantonese.
Me: Cantonese isn't an angry language.
Mark: I'll believe it when I hear it.
Me: Well, my family is just unusually angry.

there's also been numerous times in which i've gotten off the phone with my parents to find a non-asian friend staring at me:

friend: are you okay?
me: yeah, why?
friend: well, you were kind of yelling. it sounded like you were fighting.
me: no, we weren't fighting; just talking.
