a thought on movies

It amuses me that people actually think Transformers might have a plot. Hello, 1. It's a Michael Bay movie, 2. It's about robots fighting. I must be easily pleased, because 2 satisfies me just fine for a popcorn movie. Robots! Fighting!
Speaking about Michael Bay movies, we watched The Island the other day.

I thought it wasn't so bad, and definitely didn't warrant all the bad reviews it got. It's not aiming to be Blade Runner, but neither is it crap like Fantastic Four was. I actually thought it had a lot of interesting ideas, but by the end they were sacrificed for the action sequences.
Mark and I had completely forgotten the trailer in which the entire plot was given away, which probably didn't entice people into the movie theaters, and apparently the combined star power of Ewan MacGregor and Scarlett Johanssen didn't either. The movie is about how there's an entire society of clones who live only to have their organs harvested. The clones don't know they are clones, and have been fed a story about how the outside world is contaminated. The one uncontaminated area is called "The Island", and people get picked via a lottery to go to the island. In reality, they go to a hospital in which their organs are harvested for their clones, who may have gotten into car accidents, need organ transplants, want a baby, etc.
Ewan is one of the clones, and as our hero, he starts to question things.
Long story short, he escapes with Scarlett in tow and they keep running to stay alive and then save the other clones.
Notable cameos: Steve Buscemi as a worker who's from the outside world, Sean Bean as the villain/mad genius, Michael Clarke Duncan as the first guy who gets sent to the Island, also fulfilling the "black dude dies" role, and Ethan Phillips (Star Trek Voyager) as Ewan's friend.
The story bears a little bit of resemblance to Kazuo Ishiguro's novel "Never Let Me Go", in which clones are harvested for their organs. In this case, thought, the clones are aware of the reasons for their existence. I haven't read it, so I can't really comment on the specifics.
