Things you can do to help Palestinians
I am so tired. I have never felt more disheartened by the ongoing situation, not even when Trump was President. That Biden is currently President and bombing multiple countries in the Middle East, fast-tracking money and arms to Israel, even at the expense of Ukraine and other national priorities, just makes me sick. In the interest of trying to do something useful, here are some links to charities and aid that are assisting Gazans on the ground:
- UNRWA - the UN aid organization that is currently under fire because Israel accused 12 of its employees of collaborating with Hamas. Here’s an explainer for why it’s important.
- Palestine Children’s Relief Fund - I have linked to this charity before; in calmer times they focus on children with cancer. They are currently on the ground in Gaza.
- Palestine Red Crescent Society - they are part of the International Red Cross, and rescue people often at great risk to themselves.
- Jose Andres’ charity World Central Kitchen is on the ground in Gaza and Rafah, serving up meals.
- ESims for Gazans aims to connect Palestinians on the ground in Gaza with eSim cards so they can get connected and reach people for help and assistance.
- The House is bringing a standalone $14.3 billion aid package to Israel to the floor this week. Somehow this is connected to the border bill not being racist enough or something. (I also do not get liberals cheering on this stupid border bill because it is just as or more racist than when Trump was trying to do it.)
- Bernie to Introduce Amendment to End U.S. Complicity in Netanyahu’s War on the Palestinian People - can you just say the word ceasefire already please?!!
- Rashida Tlaib and Cori Bush were the only representatives in the House to veto the racist GOP bill that would ban Palestinians from entering the US; according to her it’s redundant, and it also would extend the ban to members of PLO, who are very pointedly NOT HAMAS. Not that that stopped everyone from putting out “Tlaib and Bush side with Hamas” headlines anyway.
- Viet Thanh Nguyen wrote an opinion piece for the Nation titled “Palestine is in Asia: An Asian-American Argument for Solidarity” that argues for expanding the definition of Asian America to also include Middle Easterners in our politics, and I found it very moving.
