Apparently mine is still up. I haven't touched it since last year. I edited it a little, and I only have one friend on it. I looked at some of the data you could put in and got thoroughly creeped out by the add your "size" and "height" questions. The fuck? Also, they don't list my high school. I guess we're too ghetto.

I tried uploading a picture, but the file size was too big. Oh well; I probably don't want my face plastered over the Intarweb anyway.

Work is driving me crazy. We're doing audits, right? Only this time, everyone's basically auditing my work from last year, and the guy who's directly above me, the one who trained me on this stuff, keeps coming up to me, going, "Kim? How are you doing this random thing that the auditors will look at?" I tell him how I've been doing it, and he keeps telling me, "Oh, we're actually supposed to be doing it this way." I wanted to say, "Well, you could have told me that when you were TRAINING ME LAST YEAR, right?" Arrgh. So I've been going back the past few months, double-checking all my work to make sure they conform to the standard he only informed me yesterday of, when I thought I'd been keeping to the standard all along. These are really minor, nitpicky things, but they matter to the auditors.

I had a Dale Carnegie session this week. It was all right; it seems like the class suddenly got halved. I think some people might have dropped out. I stumbled over the talks I gave; we were supposed to do a one minute speech on something that required a lot of action, and a two-minute speech about a lesson we learned in our professional life that we had "earned the right to talk about". They want us to do gestures and get really animated, and I am just not a very expressive person. It's not like I speak in a monotone, but unless I am actually excited about something, it's hard for me to have anything other than a pretty blank expression.

Well, there's one other girl who's having the same problem I am. She's some sort of grad student scientist, who's attending with her husband. I actually think she's been performing pretty well, but her voice doesn't inflect much.

Work suddenly dumped itself on me. Damn. We're in audit season right now, so there's a lot of pressure. I'm kind of pissed at myself because I'm discovering mistakes I made months ago and wasn't able to correct in time. Grr..

Other than that, I had a marathon IM session right before dinner today. I haven't done that since college! Am I getting old or what? I am, because everyone around me cannot stop talking about housing, and the future. Like, retirement and stuff. I think I talked to like, what 6 different people about life, the universe and everything. It's kind of crazy, actually. I wish everyone would just move near me; then I could see them whenever I wanted to.

Things I learned today: There is a Chinese Hospital in San Francisco, that serves the Asian population there. They have Chinese food in the hospital. You know what I wonder? I wonder if they let you eat oranges and chicken soup if you have a cold. My mom would never let me touch the stuff when I was sick.

I also learned that Chinese women are at higher risk of dying from breast cancer, mostly because they do not go get mammograms, they do not do breast exams, and they generally don't allow their doctors to do breast exams, most likely for cultural reasons. There are a lot of things we don't do, that we should, for cultural reasons.

I checked out some of the new magazines in the bookstore. There's a new one called "Cookie", that is a family oriented magazine. What it makes me think of is the joke in Everybody Hates Chris, where Chris is talking about how his family only buys generic food. "We didn't have cookies, we had COOKIE." There's another one, called We Men, that's bilingual, written in Chinese and English, and about as thick as a September issue of W. I flipped through it, but I didn't get it. Even though there was a beautiful Asian male model on the front cover, the models inside were all white guys. Bleh.

I'm still trying to figure out why my family bothered to go into a Chinese restaurant that served green tea ice cream for dessert. Oh well.

Ever since I had this job, I've been freaking out about doctors and the entire practice of medicine. Reading stuff like this article about "a Polish woman who was left partially blind after doctors refused to give her an abortion" and the German nurse accused of killing 29 patients does not help at all. If you want to really freak out, you can type in a common surname in the Medical Board of California's Enforcement Public Document Search. It can get pretty gruesomely detailed. Luckily, the doctors I've seen myself have not made it on there, but we all know that monitoring is imperfect.

Head hurts. Should probably get off computer.

Woman struck, killed by train - it's the one I take every day (not at that time). They still haven't identified the woman or whether it was a suicide or not. There are only two reasons to be crossing the Caltrain tracks - 1. You really, really want to die, or 2. You're stupid or in the care of someone really stupid. There are several big warning signs; one of them says "Tracks are for trains", which always makes me think of "Trix are for kids", for some reason.

We had our "holiday lunch" today. I know, I know, we're two months late; what can I say, we were really busy. My secret Santa gift was really nice - I got a Death Cab for Cutie CD and a gift certificate to Borders. Guess what's across the street from my workplace?

The short cab ride there was hilarious. Do you know how many liberal rants you can cover in ten minutes? Our cab driver was very nice, but as soon as we got settled in, we were captive to his opinions on Social Security, the State of the Union address, big oil, poverty, Katrina, etc. until he dropped us off in front of the restaurant. I now know more about his politics than many people I talk to everyday, like my coworkers. (On the other hand, I work in a pretty liberal company.)

I seem to keep having some variation of this conversation with people:

Me: Could you please get me an apple?
Other: Here's an orange.
Me: Thanks, but that's not what I asked for. Could you please get me an apple?
Other: But I gave you an orange.
Me: I know, but that's not what I need. I really need an apple.
Other: It's the same thing, really. Have the orange.

On the way home, I picked up SFBG for some light reading on the train ride home. I read Tim Redmond's editorial, and had to put the paper down, because it was the most moronic thing I have read in a while. In the editorial, he compares Craig Newmark, the guy who runs Craigslist, to Wal-Mart, because When Craig comes to town (and he's coming to just about every town in the nation soon), the existing community institutions – say, the locally owned weekly newspaper – have a very hard time competing. In many ways, he's like a Wal-Mart – yeah, landlords get cheaper real estate ads, and consumers find some bargains, but the money all goes out of town. And he puts nothing back into the community: He doesn't, for example, hire reporters or serve as a community watchdog.

I mean, really, how's that for hyperbole? I admit that I feel pretty defensive about craigslist, because I owe a lot to it. I got my job, apartment, and a bunch of furniture through craigslist, and I didn't have to pay a dime for any of it. (Well, some for the furniture, but not much, and it's not like any of that actually went to Newmark.) Craig Newmark's given back plenty to the community - I mean, craigslist itself was created initially because he wanted "connect with people better".

The whole thing just seemed like sour grapes. Is Craig Newmark hiring illegal immigrants? Is he outsourcing labor? Is he paying subpar wages to his employees? How, exactly, is he actually acting like Wal-Mart, besides being successful?

The alt-weeklies and mainstream print papers are all terrified of how he's going to basically shut them down or something, but I have yet to see them offer an alternative that's even close or better than what craigslist offers. If I wanted to look for a job, the only ones I would find in the alt-weeklies are for bartending or egg donation. If I wanted an apartment, I'm stuck reading acronyms for exorbitant San Francisco lunchbox apartments in a tiny 1 inch ad, and if I wanted to buy some cheap furniture from someone the person posting the ad would probably spend more than I'm willing to pay for it.

This rest of this week's SFBG sucked as well. That editorial irritated me a lot.

I should be cleaning up.

What is butt rock? How does it compare to cock rock?

Is there any sort of distinction between all the screaming in death metal?

Any advice for using my Wacom tablet? I'm still practicing on drawing. What are those clicky things on the pen for? Can I change those settings?

Did you know that in California, you can get your medical license denied if you don't pay your child support? And it will say so when someone searches for you in the database? However, that will get wiped off if you know how to get it taken care of. (I have no idea how you do that.)

1. Tomorrow is the company holiday party. We get two drinks! Coworker: "We only get two drinks?"
2. Man, this was a crappy week. My phone is still broken, Sprint wouldn't replace it unless the accountholder (my sister) was there, and I'm not an authorized user anyway, so I can't make any changes. And I still have 3 months left on my contract. And I have an article to write, which requires that I make a few long-distance calls. Grr. Hope email works.
3. Mark is eating French food with his sister right now. Me = REALLY REALLY JEALOUS.
4. Bought some clothes for my niece and Kaitlin. Ok, since when did kid's clothes get so frickin' expensive? I'm paying more for a pair of jeans than I would for my own pants. I'm getting my niece a board game, too, because I do not want to play the Game of Life one more time. Last time we played it for three days straight. I think that was enough. I have no idea what I'm getting the twins.
5. It was a two-magazine week. Budget Living was a mistake that I realized as soon as I got on the train. I was looking for the Vanity Fair, which seems to have disappeared at the bookstore and at the supermarket. Grr. Arthur Frommer (he does travel guides) has a new magazine out called Smart Shopping, which had way better deals than Budget Living did.
6. Also new: Radar Magazine folds, again. You know what? They started out too big; it was bound to implode. I am not as full of love for the magazine as the author of the article is, but I think they had potential.
7. GiantRobot's current issue has an article on a guy who made a documentary about convicted men whose innocence was proved via DNA evidence. Interesting.
8. This weekend I will pay my parents back entirely for the car (which, by the way, remains awesome). Then it's serious saving up time for either a trip to China or a trip to Europe.
9. The power went out at my apartment on Monday, and I wasn't able to get Internet back up until yesterday. Stupid PG&E.
10. I still have not watched the TiVoed episodes of Project Runway Season 2 yet. I am saving it up for some vegging out this weekend. From the commercials, 3 of the guys look like coke addicts. And is that the "Follow your bliss" guy I see? If you have seen it, please don't spoil me for it.
11. Boston Legal is the slashiest television show ever.

Today the cleaning lady tried to strike up a conversation with me. I would have been happy to talk about the upcoming holiday, except for the fact that I was peeing.

My raise finally went into effect.

Anyone got any recommendations for charities to donate to?

Please stop referring to Wednesday as "Hump Day". I have an overactive imagination.

Good night.

Local media disappointed that traffic gridlock not achieved; the rest of the Bay Area returns to grumbling about their "long-ass commutes" and ignoring the existence of BART workers. Reporters heard bitching about having to stop speculating on what might happen and having to focus on what actually happened. Newspapers pissed off at having to stay up past the midnight deadline as the union kept asking for "one more friggin' extension."

That has been playing in my head all day, because the whole situation just calls for Onion headlines.

The RZA is this month's guest editor for Boldtype. Boldtype is a monthly newsletter of recommended books. It's the spirituality issue, which is relevant, since it's something I've been thinking about a lot lately. (Why don't I have any Wu-Tang Clan on my iPod, though? This must be fixed.)

There's an interview with the RZA, in which he won my heart by saying: I actually collect a lot of books so I can have some common ground with everybody. I get that from coming up in New York where you get all types of people walking around. Books are a common denominator with everyone.
