I mean, I think we need all the pining, right? I would love anything set in post book 2 that shows these two guys realizing just how much they hate being apart, even, if Reece has "turned."
I'd also love anything set between the books, although I know it's not a lot of time that has passed when Twisted Shadows begins, it's clear that Reece and Evan have been texting regularly in the interim. And I love how well we get that sense in the first few chapters of them talking more and more, thinking of each other more and more--falling in love. So anything that explores and expands on that dynamic would also be amazing.
Or I'm not against some imagined happy future for them if you want to hand wave (or if you're even brave enough to take a shot at) how they get out of their cliff hanger and live happily ever after.

I am among the fan girls who read the "From Antarctica with Love" article and became deeply invested in the Atkinson/Pennell love story. I would love anything with the two of them getting to spend some time together away from their duties. I'd also love to see a bit more from Atkinson's pov about Pennell as it feels like we have more of the reverse in Pennell's diaries. I'm okay with the story being realistic about the time period that they were in and the incredibly challenging and harrowing events that they lived through. Some melancholy is okay, but would love for there to be more happiness than sadness.

River is my favorite. He is so dumb and means so well, and yet he is so damn bad at being a spy. I love him fucking up in lovable ways that come from his good intentions. I love all his abandonment issues and his relationship with his granddad, and yeah, I just love River.
Jackson I love for the total opposite reasons. I love that he appears bumbling and is secretly incredibly competent. I love how loyal he is, and I love how much he despises River's Granddad and yet can't quite force himself to despise River as much as he wants to.
Standish, I love the way she interacts with all of them and keeps the team together. Her perpetual exasperation/affection, and the way she’s constantly showing, that yeah, in fact, she’s an agent too, actually, so don’t underestimate her. Where River often tries to be compassionate but trips over his own self-absorption, Standish seems to have more of an innate capacity for empathy and insight into people that the others don’t always recognize as the incredible skill/asset that it is.
So yeah, that's what I love about these characters, and I would happily take any story where they and any other members of their band you care to throw in there are interacting in ways that highlight these aspects
I do not ship anyone on the show and would rather not see any of them having interactions that feature romantic feelings or sex. At least not with each other. If you're inspired to give one of them an oc romantic interest, go for it.

Last night I wrapped up Solo Dance by Kotomi Li, translated from Japanese by Arthur Morris. This short book is about a young gay Taiwanese woman who struggles with both internal and external homophobia, and eventually moves to Japan looking for understanding.

Queer stories from other countries are always interesting to me and it’s a good reminder that progress has not been even all over the world. Much of the book is pretty depressing, because the protagonist struggled with fitting in even before she realized she was gay, and she has some real struggles. She is battling severe depression for much of the book and at several points, suicidality.

The book is touching in that the protagonist’s struggles feel real and she’s someone who is so close to having positive experience that could change her life for the better, but her luck keeps dropping on the other side each time.

I don’t want to spoil too much about the end, but while I was grateful for the overall tone of the it, it is contrived and not very believable. But I did enjoy the protagonist’s travels leading up to that point. It’s not at all subtle, and it packs a lot more plot into the final handful of chapters than the rest of the book, but it was still sweet to see the protagonist’s perspective shift a little through her engagements with other people.

I’m not sure if it’s the translation or the original prose, but the language is stilted and very emotionally distant. The reader is kept at arm’s length from the protagonist virtually the whole novel, and while we’re often told she’s feeling these intense feelings, I never felt it. It was like reading a clinical report of her feelings, which was disappointing.

This is Li’s first novel, and it reads that way. There’s a lot of heart in it, and I appreciate it for that, but it lacks a lot in technical skill. I would be interested to see more of Li’s future work, when she’s had more time to polish her ability, but I don’t regret taking the time with this one.

I love that this series focuses on older characters! I adore Alastar and Alyna's romance and would love to see more of that than what fit in the books, especially from Alyna's point of view. What did she think when Alastar first came to Imageisle? What did she fall in love with? Does she talk to her friends about him?

If my characters have made camp in a wood for the night while travelling on horseback, what will the horses be doing?

I was sort of picturing them standing dozing together under a tree somewhere nearby -- possibly tied, possibly hobbled, possibly just being a herd together -- but poking around on the Internet suggests that if not shut up in a stable horses are actually quite active by night. (Which messes with the story, as quite apart from anything else nobody is going to be able to hear anything while keeping watch if the horses are busy foraging around!)

Review: A middle-aged Japanese man stages a search for a breakthrough actress as a pretense for interviewing prospective brides, and gets more than he bargained for. The thing about asking the question, does this mildly icky person deserve this oversized punishment, is that means inhabiting mildly icky in depth to first justify and then dismiss the inclination towards punishment. That makes for a lot of milquetoast Japanese misogyny and slow foreshadowing, capped by high-stakes and surreal revenge porn from the victim's PoV. Murakami is better when he's weirder, and when anxieties about Japanese society are framework rather than the central subject. But the constrained length, antagonist characterization, and the delightful dark humor of the revenge (which makes for pretty funny foreshadowing) has a salvaging effect, pulling this tauter and rendering it more readable.

Review: A memoir from the Eat, Pray, Love lady, detailing her romantic relationship with Rayya Elias during the course of Elias's terminal illness, and a subsequent recovery from love and sex addiction. I came in search of a hot mess; this sure is a hot mess, but not of the unputdownable variety. Gilbert is insufferable, a kind of relaxed and talky that reads as glib and unedited rather than confessional, interspersed with the most clumsy, naïve poetry I've ever pushed through.

So, she's annoying. But is she bad? Is this an authentic memoir? Does it have value? I'm not particularly interested in the simplifying effect of culpability, and hinging condemnation on the homicidal ideation is ridiculous. But this is a memoir that centers another person, and Gilbert is willing to overshare when it concerns Elias, but obtrusively circumspect when it comes to equally salient figures/events. Elias has living relatives, and so the claim towards respecting the privacy of third parties doesn't hold water; rather, the selective telling feels incomplete and dishonest. And I'll admit a personal aversion to AA/twelve-step program frameworks, but this selective transparency combined with the surrender of the self to a higher power and the offensively clumsy justifications of suffering ("What if everything (and everyone) that we label as 'difficult' or 'an obstacle' or even 'dysfunctional' is in fact a deliberately designed construct meant to awaken us to our true natures[...]?") cumulatively feels shallow and self-serving. Gilbert's self-criticisms fail to negate this fundamental flaw. No, this isn't a memoir of value, even if the value is hate-reading.

I have a headcanon that Te'ijal Ravenfoot is a psychopath. I would love a story that explored this concept further, delving into how Te'ijal's psychopathy would affect/recontextualize both her interactions with her colleagues and her actions throughout the Aveyond games. Furthermore, content that supplements those already in the Aveyond games, such as extra conversations or scenes, would also be welcome.
DNW: Unrequested kinks, mundane/setting change AUs, Te'ijal being "cured" of her psychopathy (i.e. being made neurotypical), Te’ijal character bashing*, neurodivergence being used to excuse bad behavior**.
*Given the stigma surrounding psychopathy, I understand if there is any confusion over this specific DNW. Let me make this clear: psychopaths are still people; having little or no empathy or emotional intelligence does not make one categorically evil or dangerous. For the purposes of this prompt, Te’ijal should be a person with both rights and accountability.
**Using neurodivergence to excuse bad behavior sounds something like this: “She can’t take responsibility for her actions because she can’t control herself/she doesn’t know what she’s doing/her brain isn’t wired correctly/etc.”
On a related note, I am fine with the inclusion of sanist language, bigotry, and/or violence as long as it is not presented as ethically/morally correct by the story itself. Keep in mind that hostility towards a neurodivergent offender in retaliation to the offender perpetrating antisocial behavior, such as inflicting harm upon or violating the rights of others, is not necessarily sanism.
On another related note, I am also fine with Te'ijal receiving treatment for her psychopathy as long as it does not fall into the trope of curing neurodivergence.
Disclaimer: Psychopathy is not a condition that one can be clinically diagnosed with. The proper diagnostic term for people exhibiting behavior commonly associated with psychopathy is antisocial personality disorder. However, the term "psychopathy" is still useful as a descriptor for a distinct pattern of behavior within the spectrum of antisocial personality disorder.

Quasimorph has become my greatest special interest over the past couple of years. One of the most fascinating things about it is the cyberpunk, science-fantasy dystopia portrayed in that game. I'd love a story that explores not just the lives of those who live in the anarcho-capitalist paradigm in Quasimorph. The scope of the available characters in this request covers the most violent, destructive, and brutal element of Quasimorph's society: the private military sector, as exemplified by both the soldier Francis Reid-Daly, and the proprietor John Hawkwood. The first chapter of this book is such a peanut gallery of all the adversaries of the story. This is my favourite characterisation of Ulryk in the literature so far. He's described in an incredibly sexy way, too, with eyes darkening in anger or sparkling in joy. During the introductory conversation, his mood switches from ire to amusement with the speed of a falling blade, and he manages to offend his late brother in front of a stranger.
And then there's Kuno! Obviously used to his master's volatile nature and making snarky remarks about it. Isn't that an interesting relationship? Why is the grand commander allowed to laugh at Ulryk's expense? How close are those two? Is there friendship or something more between them? Or maybe they're just two like-minded baddies united by common politics?

This is an easy-to-read book, in which the characters have emotional depth as thick as a sheet of printing paper. Ulryk is evil here because the plot demands a punching bag for the main hero. But I love that for the main adversary of the story, of all the possible Teutonic knights, the author chose Ulryk. The idea that Ulryk von Jungingen and Klaus Störtebeker met in person is glorious. They also got an incredibly ~~cool~~ hot sword-fighting scene in the book. Maybe the fic could deal with the aftermath of that encounter?

I’m all about Robin 1.0 in any Batman canon or fanon and I feel he’s a little under-represented in WFA. Fix that! Very happy with an exploration of these versions of Bruce and Dick pre WFA timeline - with Dick as Robin - but also love the big family feel so happy for all relationships. My favorite relationships to read about are Dick with Bruce or Damian, but they’re all a big warm hug in this version so happy with them all.

I’ve read a lot about Rupert and Amir’s relationship over the course of fanfic, what I really want to see is how they interact with their mothers and mothers-in-law. Things I love about these characters: Rural Medicine and Texaco Mike doing a little bit of everything to keep their community alive, Pathology being wholesome in the basement with his microscope, Anesthesia's complicated relationship with Surgery, Ortho and Opthamology being confused about the squishy non-bone parts of the body/everything below the nose, Ortho in general, the different characters interacting with each other, the fact that all the doctors ultimately want to help people despite their individual issues and the stress that they're under. It's fun to see comments or reaction videos from people in the medical field talking about how accurate the sketches are. I'd be interested in reading about the different medical specialties interacting with each other and how they have unique perspectives that influence how they see their jobs and the human body. It could also be fun to read something from the perspective of a patient who is navigating the medical system and meeting the different providers.

I appreciate how Elisabeth Wheatley is an avid romance reader and writer who doesn't mind making fun of the more ridiculous romance tropes, so that the series comes off as self-aware without being mean. It's fun to see how the genres have different perspectives on issues related to romance but they also find common ground a lot of the time. I also enjoy how they explore the fantasy that it would be easier to date a vampire or fae lord than it is to deal with modern dating culture. I'd be interested in seeing new genres interacting with the main four (sci-fi romance? queer romance genres?) or hearing them discuss different topics. Or what if they somehow ended up in each other's genres?

3/5. Third book in this scifi trilogy, really do not start here.

Damn, it didn’t land it. It didn’t terribly fumble it either, but.

Let’s back up. I really liked the first book in this trilogy, which you should absolutely go into unspoiled because the ride is worth it. But she had to do different modes with the next books for plot and structure and not repeating herself reasons. Unfortunately, I was glad to see these people again, but I think this whole series lost momentum and vitality. And the deeper this series got into the story of a remnant population barely clinging on after a genocide several decades ago, well. She says they aren’t supposed to be space Jews, but, like, girl. These books are doing that thing where they valorize an oppressed population and an oppressed culture in a way that is both satisfying and also uncomfortable, if you get me. Satisfying in the way a reductive viewpoint is satisfying. Uncomfortable in the way a reductive viewpoint is uncomfortable.

Also, I am not at all qualified to opine on this, but I’ve caught the edges of conversations from people who think she has valorized her space Jews right over the border into weird antisemitic trope land, which did jump out at me when ( spoilers for the end of the first book ). Anyway, do with that what you will.

Look, I’m complaining about this a lot, but I genuinely think the first book is doing cool stuff, and I genuinely think the whole series is thinking about identity and refugees and cultural violence and retribution and repair. All chewy, important stuff. Also, the way women and nonbinary people are allowed to be intense and obsessed with each other and over-the-top in the first book is the good shit. I’m glad I read it, even though the last book had serious POV bloat (way too many) and didn’t land with the force I wanted it to.

Since I'm vaguely tracking things we've been making: a few days ago we made Smitten Kitchen's gingerbread apple upside-down cake. It's tasty, although I didn't like it nearly as much as the SK Mom's Apple Cake that we made not that long ago. (

scruloose likes it more than I do, for the record.) Now I mostly just want to make an actual gingerbread. ^^;

(My brain keeps starting to compose a post or posts about my currently-annoyingly-complication feelings about holiday baked goods etc., between our intensely-covid-cautious life and my still-newish need to stay aware of my blood glucose, but will I actually manage to write about it? Who knows. It's exhausting.)

I started my first day of vacation waking ahead of my alarm from a weird, teeth-clenchingly stressful dream, possibly one of a sequence, and it takes me a while to shake off dreams like that. >.< I've gotten a couple of household things done/underway, though, and am sitting down to do some manga work once I've posted this.

We still haven't decorated Bucky; he comes with lights, which are the most important part of a Christmas tree, especially without the smell of a real tree, and at least one year we bought our tree and put lights on it and never did anything more, and that was fine. I guess it's possible this'll be another such year. (Although we're due for strong winds and heavy rain tonight and into tomorrow, and if we lose power, I guess that's something we could do tomorrow afternoon.)

But we got most of our other fragments of decor up last night, and this morning I put out my Nativity set for the first time in a few years. It's wooden, but a couple of the pieces have taken damage over the years nonetheless (before my time, or when I was young enough that I don't remember what happened), and having it out around the cats has made me nervous since my mother gave it to me* several years ago. But a few months ago I bought a piece of display wall shelving for my office (and my office mostly stays shut when I'm not in it for long), and the set fits in it fairly well, so now it's there and I've got my fingers crossed.

(Also, this year I bought an old-fashioned ceramic tree from a local artist, and it's on a speaker under the wall display, so realistically, if a cat gets up on my desk where they shouldn't be, I'll know about it from the tree going down. [Which I really hope it doesn't, because it's breakable and the lights aren't actually attached, so that's all kinds of cat hazard in a package. And thus, it's in my office; if the cats were actually prone to getting on my desk and messing with things, I wouldn't have bought the tree at all, but even Sinha is really pretty good about it.])

*I think I mentioned at the time that this is the Nativity set of my childhood, carved of olive wood. My mother's parents once--in the '50s, I think? When she was a kid--were in Jerusalem over Christmastime, and brought it home. Mum deciding to pass it on to me is genuinely one of the best gifts she's ever given me.

ficinabox. And I didn't even participate this year! But I usually try to read and comment widely before creator reveals and this year the timing was not great for me.

Does this mean that he gives up posting his fic?
Nah nah nah nah nah he's got this handled. Don't even worry about it. Chapters will be posted come hell, high water, hospital visit, house invasions, eviction, mob action, emergency road trip, or kidnapping. Technoblade never dies, and he never misses an update.
Why I love it: A story told entirely in author's notes: the format works fantastic, the character voice is impeccable, and most importantly it's hilarious.
Canon knowledge required: Definitely not (tested on my gf.)

In the last year, AO3 has seen a rise in "art commission" spambot comments. The bots leaving these comments pretend to be artists who want to make comics or illustrations for a fan's fic. After convincing their targets to contact them off AO3, they scam their targets into paying for that art. Fans have reported that after sending payment, they either received AI-generated art or nothing at all.

If you receive a scam comment from a guest, you can press the "Spam" button on the comment. This helps train our automated spam-checker to better detect this type of behavior.

If you encounter a scammer that has a registered account, or if you encounter a guest posting scam comments on someone else's work, please report them to the Policy & Abuse committee. To do so:

Select the "Thread" button on the scammer's comment. This will take you to the specific comment page.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Policy Questions & Abuse Reports.

In the "Brief summary of Terms of Service violation" field, enter "Spambot".

In the "Description of the content you are reporting" field, enter "This is a spambot, their username is USERNAME."

Reporting in this fashion helps us auto-sort your report so that it can be handled as soon as a Policy & Abuse volunteer is available. To help us address reports about these types of bots as fast as possible, please only submit one report per account, and don't include multiple accounts in the same report.
