Psst...when will Livejournal get a "Save As Draft" function? It's only on 99% of all other blog software.

We went to check out some local theater. Is there a rule that all theater sets must be a New York City subway station? We're in LA! We have a subway system, too, you know. Okay, just barely, but still.

"All About Walken" is an evening of Christopher Walken impersonators in various forms and acts. It opens with "Robert De Niro" picking up "Christopher Walken" in a cab, and in addition to original improvisations, there is an endless quoting of many of the movies he's been in, most notably "The Deer Hunter" and "Pulp Fiction", where two Asian men play the parts. (They broke the wall to comment on it. "You know, it's a challenge.")

I have not watched most of the movies (did see Pulp Fiction) and I kind of remain baffled by the whole Christopher Walken thing. To me, he just kind of talks in a weird manner and acts the same way in all his movies. So I kind of don't really get it or why he's considered a "genius". Though I enjoyed it, I missed a ton of the jokes because of that. Anyway, we picked this postcard up in a small bookstore on Sunset, and Mark said, "We have to go".

The evening started off with some Youtube videos of various Christopher Walken impressions. The keys to a successful Christopher Walken impression are: a blank stare, hand movements in unnatural places, the hair, pauses in odd places, and weird inflections. Most of the impressions were pretty good and pretty diverse and creative. It wasn't a night of just quoting his movies, though there was a lot of that, too. My favorite part was the improv portion, where they did Walken as various movies that he never did. Example: "Chris Walken as Jaws" (the shark), "Chris Walken in Boys Don't Cry", and the one I yelled out, which stumped them: "Chris Walken in Point Break". Hee!

The only weak spot was the girl who played, well, "The Girl" in all the skits. For one, she had a really shrill, high-pitched voice. I have not disclosed this to a lot of people, but I can't hear things above a certain pitch, and below a certain pitch. Occasionally I had no clue what she was saying because I couldn't really hear her. The other things was, she had few interesting part besides "The Girl". I hate that about most media, and wish that when people decide to cast "The Girl", would go back and rewrite it to "Someone Interesting". She played the part of a cabaret singer who gives Walken his name, she played Meryl Streep as Chris Walken, and she did a sexpot scene where she replaces Walken from the Pulp Fiction scene as sexual entertainment. It was ok, I guess, but it could have been way better if they'd just taken those parts out.

There were other female Walken impersonators - my favorite was the one who started out doing a Robert De Niro impression, and in the middle of it, she switched to Chris Walken - it was actually kind of brilliant. I wish we had a video of that.

Also, one of the Asian impersonators, Kenzo Lee, is from Oakland. Yay!
