Been trying to find the political songs within Cantopop. Most of it is fairly old. The above is from Dat Ming Pair, and is a tribute to the victims of Tiananmen Square. Below is a song from the rock band Beyond, which disbanded after the tragic death of the lead singer at 35 when he fell off a stage and hit his head. The song was supposed to be about his dissatisfaction with the Cantopop industry, but with lyrics such as "Forgive me this life of uninhibited love and indulgence of freedom Although I'm still afraid that one day I might fall" it's also become an anthem of sorts for revolutionary types. Beyond was also one of the few bands to actually write songs about topics other than love, including a tribute to Nelson Mandela, and "Amani", which means "peace" in Swahili. Don't get me wrong; they're not perfect, they also wrote "Arab dancing girl". Anyway, kind of fun to go down memory lane. I remember not liking their music much as a kid, but now that I'm older, I think I just didn't know how to listen to it.
