American Apparel Seeks Retraction Of 10-Page Exposé, May Seek Legal Action
You can read a preview in Clamor Magazine here - there's a link to the PDF.
I want to know how this will play out.

Steak & Seafood for Two coupon at Morton's - $99 - unfortunately you can't use it at the San Francisco location, but you can use it in Los Angeles. Good until September 30, 2006, in case you're planning a trip down there.
Dateline does a story on Dov Charney, owner of American Apparel, sexual harasser or sexual creative? They quote Claudine Ko, who did the infamous Jane article in which Dov Charney asks her whether it's okay to masturbate in front of her. And she lets him. I own several American Apparel shirts, and I've bought from them a couple times, but honestly, I think Dov Charney's a total fucking creep. A lot of the people who do creative stuff I like (bands, musicians, etc) or companies who give out free shirts buy from them, probably because they probably give a good bulk deal, and make people feel good about "not buying from a sweatshop", but I'd really prefer to have other options.
Oh, and the sweatshop thing? They've busted union organizing before. I remember hearing an interview on NPR with an employee, and she made sure to say "We don't need unions" in her speech, and was really pissed NPR said nothing about the organizing. It was for A Day Without Immigrants. Hmmm...
Anyway, supposedly American Apparel can pay "non-sweatshop wages" because of their machinery, or some such thing that hastens development, and takes them out of the garment bidding war, in which the garment company that bids the lowest amount of money for a designer gets to do the job.
I have to go, but maybe I'll write more later.
Meanwhile, I found this Musicians Against Sweatshops page.

School suspends kid for speaking Spanish - the suspension was rescinded after the boy's father complained. Watts, whom students describe as a disciplinarian, said she can't discuss the case. But in a written "discipline referral" explaining her decision to suspend Zach for 1 1/2 days, she noted: "This is not the first time we have [asked] Zach and others to not speak Spanish at school." (And you know what the kid actually said? "No problema." Two words.)
Back in elementary, all my friends spoke Cantonese, and I actually picked it up from them. There was an all-too-brief period where I spoke Cantonese with no American accent. My second-grade teacher, Ms. H, who was Chinese, kept admonishing us to "Speak English. You live in America now." She meant well. It still pissed me off, and us kids ignored her anyway. I remember my parents visiting her on Back-to-School night, and while I listened to her struggle to talk to them in their dialect, I figured out why she was the way she was.
It didn't annoy me any less.
A 13-year-old girl cannot be held at fault for having sex with her teacher, the state Supreme Court ruled Thursday, rejecting a school district's argument that it shouldn't have been sued because the girl was partially responsible.
Why does so much ancient Greek art feature males with small genitalia?
Dov Charney on 20/20 about American Apparel. I can't watch the direct link because Mark has ancient software and hasn't updated his stuff since he graduated. :P Going to watch it later.
David Krumholtz really grew up. He's so cute now! I didn't even recognize him as Goldstein from Harold and Kumar or Michael from 10 Things I Hate About You, but he is so hot now as the mathematician on Numb3rs.

GLEE, I tell you. I made it as far as today without buying a magazine, but then I saw Jane. Because thoughts of Claudine Ko and the whole American Apparel brouhaha was bouncing around in my head, I picked it up. Did you know it's only $1.99 now? (And what's up with the trend of magazines publishing only 10 issues a year?) I saw that one of the cover headlines, in tiny print at the bottom, was "Dov Charney wants to prove he's not a perv" or something like that and totally had to pick it up.
I was going to find a link for the original American Apparel article, but Jane's site doesn't run without Flash. Flash doesn't like my computer. So bleh. Man, I haven't even read the original article.
This follow-up article has Charney all scared and shit, because he's been slapped with a few sexual harassment suits. He describes himself self-defensively as a "sensitive soul" - which, just made me laugh out loud. Sure, as a sensitive soul myself, I love it when people I barely know jack off in front of me just to show they like me. It's a great introduction, don't you think?
Oy, more later, when I don't have a major headache.
