SB 62 - CA

Now that the recall is over, Newsom has a bunch of bills sitting on his desk that are waiting to be signed. One of those is SB 62. This one is really important, and I'd be really grateful if anyone reading this could send off a message to Newsom telling him to sign it.

SB 62 addresses garment manufacturing in CA. Currently, the way clothes are created, and the way it's been done as long as there's been a clothing industry, is that a lot of low-income, immigrant women get exploited for their labor. They work long hours in unsafe environments, and rarely allowed breaks. They are also not paid by the hour, but per piece, allowing manufacturers to skirt minimum wage laws. SB 62 aims to address this by eliminating piecework, and more importantly, holding brands liable for wage theft within their supply chains. The brands get away with feigned ignorance of sweatshop conditions by saying "oh it was the subcontractor that did it and we don't know who those are", but that's bullshit, because they also set the terms of the contract, including how much they're willing to pay for x amount of product.

Although there is opposition from the industry (of course), there are also a number of California brands that support this legislation. I'm really happy that this made it this far, but it would have a lot of ripple effects within the industry if it actually becomes law.

Via Curbed: an interview with Mark Yudof, president of the University of California.

When you began your job last year, your annual compensation was reportedly $828,000.
It actually was $600,000 until I cut my pay by $60,000. So my salary is $540,000, but it gets amplified because people say, “You have a pension plan.”

What about your housing allowance? How much is the rent on your home in Oakland?
It’s about $10,000 a month.

Um...is he living in the Hills or something? I'm pretty sure you can rent pretty sweet places for less than half that in Oakland.

Did any of you vote yesterday?
Why do Californians have to vote on budget proposals? Seriously, isn't this kind of dumb, as Californians generally don't like to pay new taxes even though our liberal selves keep passing measures that require spending more money anyway? And then we wonder why we're broke? It's not like I want the Californian government to enact stupid policies, but it seems like we wouldn't be in as deep a hole if we left a lot of the budget stuff to the actual legislature. (I have no idea if this is a better idea or not, but the current process seems untenable.)
Why do we have so many elections in the first place? I think this is the third one in Los Angeles so far. Why do we have run-off elections? Why can't we just choose first and second choice, or whatever that option is called?
If less than ten percent of the populace votes, how is that a fair and democratic process?
