The House just passed the bipartisan Antisemitism Awareness Act, house bill HR 6090, in response to college protests that have sprung up around the country against the genocide in Gaza. The bill would mandate that when the Department of Education enforces federal anti-discrimination laws it uses a definition of antisemitism put forward by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

This is bad. It essentially penalizes educational institutions for speech that is critical of Israel. It's discriminatory and an affront to free speech. Anyway, call your Senators and ask them to vote against it. Call your House reps and tell them either thank you for voting against it or tell them you're disappointed for voting for it.

It's been a while; things still suck.

A statement from Jewish Americans opposing AIPACIn contrast to AIPAC, we are American Jews who believe that US support for foreign governments should only be extended to those that respect the full human and civil rights, and right to self-determination, of all people. We oppose all forms of racism and bigotry, including antisemitism—and we support the historic alliance in our country of Jewish Americans with African Americans and other people of color in the cause of civil rights and equal justice.

Reject AIPACis a broad coalition of progressive groups working together to take on the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its affiliated dark money Super PACs across electoral, political, digital and organizing strategies. The coalition calls on candidates for federal office to take the Reject AIPAC Pledge to not take endorsements or contributions from AIPAC and/or aligned PACs.

Has Zionism Lost the Argument

There was a recent article in NYT about Guernica editors quitting over an article that was published by an Israeli writer. I didn't find the actual article itself offensive, maybe just kind of misguided or something? But anyway, r/literature has the actual gossip - the real issue is that the article was published without any editorial insight/input and did not reflect the vision of the magazine.

Speaking of NYT, New York War Crimes is a single-purpose site documenting criticism of NYT's journalistic practices, especially in regards to Palestine.

I'm supposed to vote for this guy? The best he can do is, "Well, I won't deport you like the other guy, at least."

Good interview between Christiane Amanpour and Josh Paul, the US arms dealer who quit his position over the US' actions in the mid-east. Very blunt on his end, which was refreshing.

Another interview with two peace activists, one Israeli and one Palestinian on the "day after". Their proposal: 2 states, one confederation....not exactly sure how that would work.

It is also Read Palestine week - there is a treasure trove of free books, both fiction and nonfiction about Palestine here available. I should mention that Haymarket also has a few ebooks about Palestine available for free.

I have not yet finished watching this, but Dr. Zachary Foster is hosting a teach-in series about Palestine, and they are putting it up on YouTube:

A Fired ‘Scream’ Star, Clients Booted From Agencies and a Secret Tom Cruise Meeting: Inside Hollywood’s Divide Over Israel - this absolute joke of a quote: “There’s just no excuse for not condemning Hamas and demanding the release of the hostages. Hollywood was quick to declare Black Lives Matter, as they should, and Time’s Up, as they should, and myriad other important causes,” Greenblatt tells Variety. “There’s plenty of room for criticism of Israel or to voice concerns about the ongoing war in Gaza, but that doesn’t provide celebrities and industry reps with an open license to wage unfair accusations against Israel, such as accusing it of ‘apartheid’ or ‘genocide’ or, worse, to celebrate the actions of Hamas terrorists.

Media Amplified US, Israeli Narrative on Palestinian DeathsWestern media never had any problem with health statistics from Gaza — until Israel was accused of bombing a hospital there. For years, English-speaking journalists straightforwardly cited reports from the “Palestinian health ministry in Gaza,” using its official name. But after the October 17 attack on Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, media outlets began portraying the ministry as an arm of the rebel force Hamas.

This set of links are about how violence and death are choices for the politicians in charge:

Biden's secrecy on arms transfers unnerves some Democrats

Macron calls for ceasefire

Biden approves arms deal despite his own security order.

Netanyahu rejected ceasefire for hostages deal in Gaza weeks ago

Overwhelming demands for ceasefire catch Dems by surprise - “Members see members who step out of line lose their elections,” the Democratic aide said.

They sense safety in the herd.

“If only, what, 24 members are for a cease-fire, and even [Vermont Sen.] Bernie Sanders won’t say the word, maybe they should just go with the pack,” another staff member said. “That’s the calculation.”

Their caution is demoralizing even for a workforce used to profound cynicism.

Maryland Democrats threaten funding of immigrant rights group that called for Gaza ceasefire.

Palestinian woman who lost 68 family members in Gaza confronts Elizabeth Warren

What is up with Bernie Sanders not calling for a ceasefire? He had no issue two years ago.

This pandemic is a creature of capitalist globalisation, not any single country. ‘Chinese culture’ is a convenient scapegoat - argued with a Chinese friend about why we shouldn't call it the Chinese virus the other day, but honestly, this is a better argument that goes beyond my kneejerk defensiveness.

Meanwhile, Congress debating whether they should go on recess. Apparently my rep re-introduced a bill from 2013 that allows Congress to take votes from home.

In chapter 14 of Becoming, Michelle Obama describes Barack Obama missing a key vote because Malia, their first infant child at the time, was spiking a fever. This causes him a lot of trouble politically. I don't think he ever did anything to resolve the issue, but pretty much left Michelle Obama to raising the kids and dealing with it.

When AOC took office, she instituted a generous paid parental leave policy and committed to paying her staffers at least $52k a year.

  1. If you have not registered to vote yet, you can do so here.
  2. If you are a registered Democrat, you will be able to vote in the California primary.
  3. If you are a registered independent voter or a "no party preference" voter, you will be sent a ballot without the presidential primary candidates. If you want to vote in the CA presidential primary, you have a few options: if you are registered to vote by mail (I highly recommend this), you will be sent a postcard allowing you to request an American Independent, Democratic, or Libertarian Party ballot by Feb 25. Otherwise you can contact your county elections office requesting a primary ballot for the party of your choice. If you are going to the polls to vote, you can request a specific ballot for the party of your choice.
  4. CA has same-day voter registration.
  5. The Prop 13 bill appearing on the March 3 ballot IS NOT the controversial property tax initiative Prop 13 (that one will be coming up in Sept). The one on March 3 is a $15 billion state bond issue to help schools, community colleges and universities with construction costs for their facilities.

I wish US politics had half the bluntness of Hong Kong politics. It would cut out so much bullshit.

Witness: Video of Chapman To talking about how China extorts Hong Kong for water. At the end he says "How about you fucking thank us HKers you motherfuckers? Here's another $1k for swearing".

Promise Li: US ‘leftists’: HKers aren’t critiquing nativist violence obviously they are all fascist/CIA  HK leftist reviewing a recent nativist revisionist history book: “this book is like flies inside shit and piss, trash will always be trash even if it’s being republished”

I wasn't even really paying that much attention, but knowing that Amazon dropped $1.5 million on the elections in Seattle and they probably wasted all that money is pretty satisfying

Although it wasn't nearly as satisfying as that time Meg Whitman spent $144 million of her own money to try to be CA governor.

 Because I really fucking do

Yang believes that alleviating poverty not only helps the victims of poverty and those who might one day sink into it, but that economic security also makes people smarter.

In fact, a 2013 Harvard study tested how two groups of people, shoppers in a New Jersey mall and farmers from Tamil Nadu, India, performed on IQ tests. The study concluded that the mental energy devoted to dealing with income inequality reduces how well people perform on cognitive tests. The same people taking the same test in more prosperous times, such as the farmers after harvest, performed better on tests of mental functioning.

Random thought - Russia is way better at the propaganda game because they legit don't seem to care what Americans think of them, but China is the biggest baby on the world powers block and can't stand any sort of criticism whatsoever.

fascinating

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Hong Kong protests is how quickly they are able to disseminate information, come to a consensus, and also, one of the most overlooked aspects, is how fucking good their art is. This is an article on the zines they've created, one of the cheapest ways to distribute information, especially offline. (I don't know why they don't explain that the term "salty wet', one of the names of the zines, is Cantonese slang for "perverted/perversion".
